Yes, our coaches have experience with providing health education in community and school settings. Coaches will also provide health education during a coaching session using evidence-based information from creditable sources. Education is meant for educational purposes only and not to be mistaken for medical advice.
No, our coaches do not provide nutritional advice for medical conditions, nor do they create meal plans. However, they will provide evidence-based nutritional education for support of lifestyle changes that can help improve brain (mental) health.
Health coaches use similar practices as counselors to help guide clients on their wellness journey. This includes appreciative inquiry, motivational interviewing, and positive psychology. Health coaches may ask a variety of questions to gather information and guide clients to choose their own goals for improvement. Unlike counselors and mental health providers, coaches do not diagnose mental illness, they do not prescribe medication nor do they offer medical advice. Rather, they work with individuals to develop skills to overcome obstacles, provide fresh perspective, reframe thinking patterns, and better manage emotions.
Health coaches may not specialize in treating complex mental health problems, however they do help to manage emotions, challenge negative thinking patterns, help clients create goals and provide support towards well-being. In conjunction with health care providers, coaches facilitate behavior change and help clients put changes into action. Many coaches focus on a positive future while counselors may focus on sorting through the past.
We don't recommend one or the other and often times we recommend both. Counselors can help with diagnoses and offer advice for improved well-being and coaches can help implement those changes.
However, if you are looking to improve stress management, work-life balance or want help with your goals, a coach may be the right place to start. Coaches can also help learn actionable ways to address your challenges.
Numerous scientific research on the benefits of mind-body practices exist. Yoga and meditation are proven to help reduce the effects of mild anxiety, depression and stress. Coping skills such as breathing techniques are also known to improve brain (mental) health. If you are seeking mind-body practices through Seva Health, you will be aligned with one of our yoga instructors to learn skills and develop a home mindfulness practice.
